Sunday, September 12, 2010 – Day 05

I got up late, as expected and nonetheless I spent over an hour working on the netbook. When I went out, everything was closed for Sunday. It looked like a morgue. The only place open was the water taxi where I went to buy tickets for Key Caulker. Before actually making the move I looked at the schedule and found out that the last boat from there to Belize was at 16:00 and it was already 12:50. It wouldn’t be worth it. I returned to the guest house and regrouped. The decision made was to go the zoo. I found out how to get to the bus terminal and on the way I passed from the town center where a bicycle race was on.

I did take money out from an ATM and proceeded to the terminal. When I arrived there what I saw was chaos. There were not employees working and nobody to ask for info. I assumed it was so because it was Sunday and the schedule on the wall was do abstruse that Touring himself wouldn’t have been able to decipher it. Fortunately a young man told me that I could take the bus that had just arrived. Fortunately, he was right.

I asked the conductor who collected the fare and never gave me a ticket to let me know when to get off. The bus proceeded on West highway, already familiar to me and on the 27th or so mile the conductor announced that this was the stop for the zoo. I got off and proceeded to the zoo.

It appears that I was the only person visiting. The zoo was really quiet, from people at least, and one could concentrate on the animals. The zoo is absolutely beautiful. The animals are in their natural tropical environment and even though they are in captivity, they appeared to be at ease.

Spider monkey

Tapir

Toucan

Puma

Local pigs (as filthy as the ones I know)

Jaguar

Stork

Leopard

Owl

Eagle

The zoo was closing at 17:00 and by 16:45 I was out on the highway to wait for the bus. There was a bus due at 17:00, nonetheless I tried my luck in hitchhiking. I admit defeat. When the bus came I boarded

And made it to the depot by 18:00

I walked back to the guest house, but on the way I decided to stop for a beer at the place I usually buy my food.

I bought some food and walked to the guest house.
